General Ophthalmologist

Dr. Thomas A. Deutsch is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in the medical treatment of glaucoma, corneal disease, cataract, and comprehensive eye care in Chicago.

Thomas A. Deutsch, M.D., F.A.C.S., is Professor of Ophthalmology at Rush University and Senior Advisor to the President of the Rush University.  He is also currently Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Chicago Lighthouse, a 120 year old institution supporting people who are blind, visually and otherwise disabled, and veterans.

Dr. Deutsch previously served as the Henry P. Russe, M.D. Dean of Rush Medical College of Rush University and Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs from 2002 to 2015.  He is the emeritus holder of the James A. Hunter, MD Presidential Chair of Rush University and concurrently was the Provost of Rush University from 2004 to 2019. Prior to these roles, Dr. Deutsch was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Rush.

Dr. Deutsch received his medical degree from Rush Medical College and was a resident in ophthalmology at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary. He is the author of over 75 articles, books, book chapters, and lectures extensively.

Dr. Deutsch is a member of many professional groups, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, for which he is past Secretary for New Ophthalmic Information, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the American College of Surgeons, where he formally sat on the Advisory Council for Ophthalmic Surgery and was the Ophthalmic Surgery Representative to the Program Committee.

He is the Past President of the Chicago Ophthalmological Society. He is also the recipient of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor Award and Senior Achievement Award.
